While most arcade games utilize distinct power up-items that each correspond to a specific effect on the player character, Gradius has a single power-up item. This level of capability is generally insufficient for engaging enemies, but the Vic Viper can gain greater capabilities by collecting and using power-up items. When gameplay begins, the Vic Viper is relatively slow and has only a weak gun. The name "Gradius" refers to the human-inhabited planet in which the Vic Viper is from (also known as planet Nemesis), and is not a mistranslation of the word "gladius" (cf. Such bosses have weak spots in places such as a mouth, head or eye. Note that these cores are not present on the more organic bosses of Gradius. Upon the destruction of a core, a piece of the boss may be put out of commission, seeing that it is no longer powered by a core, or if all of the cores are destroyed, the entire boss is defeated and explodes satisfyingly. When the core has sustained enough hits, it usually changes color from blue to red, indicating that it is in critical condition and its destruction is imminent. Some bosses have the ability to regenerate these walls. In a way, these tiny walls represent the boss' shielding gauge until its core is finally vulnerable to attack. However, small but destructible walls are situated in this passage, impeding the bullet shots from damaging the core, and must be whittled away by repeated well-placed shots. The player must fire shots into this passage whilst avoiding attack patterns from weapon emplacements on the body of the boss. These bosses would be designed in such a way that there would be a straight passage from the exterior of the giant craft which leads directly to one of these cores. The game became synonymous with the phrase, "Destroy the core!", as the standard of boss battles in the Gradius series involved combat with a giant craft, in the center of which would be situated one to several blue colored spheres. The player controls the trans-dimensional spaceship Vic Viper, and must battle waves of enemies through various different environments. And so, the Vic Viper takes off, far into the depths of space! The only way to put an end to the war is to plunge deep through the enemy forces and destroy its very core. Its target is the enemy fortress, Xaerous. Facing inevitable defeat before their ruthless invaders, Gradius has pinned its last hopes on the hyper-space fighter Vic Viper. Unfortunately, that peaceful existence came to a sudden end when Gradius became the target of a subspace star cluster known as Bacterian. A lush, beautiful world, the planet Gradius has thrived in peace for many years. Across the galaxy, there exists a distant planet known as Gradius. The girls’ journey to “the end of the world” takes the form of a day trip to Sincheon Station, the final stop on a train line out of Seoul. As the film progresses, the girls naturally find their pairings, and by the end, we get extended scenes between Siyeon and Yeonwoo together in a room, and Songhee and Sojung together in a separate room, before they all come back together in the same room (and frame) for the final scene. Their energetic play-fighting contrasts with Siyeon and Songhee’s friendly but cautious conversation as they navigate a burgeoning friendship. Even while we’re focusing on Siyeon and Songhee’s conversation, the other two girls are always visible. In one early scene in a gym, Siyeon and Songhee chat in the foreground of the frame, while Yeonwoo and Sojung are visible in the background through a glass wall, playing with punching bags. Through careful blocking, Kwon and Seo establish the girls as a tight-knit unit while also observing the dynamics between the individual girls within that group. The girls trek down a country road in Short Vacation. Kwon and Seo shoot most scenes with minimal coverage, allowing us to observe, mostly in wide shots, how the girls interact, whether that’s slumping over each other as they sleep on a train, or walking down the road in a close group. Siyeon, to a certain extent, acts as our point-of-view character, but Short Vacation is very much an ensemble film. Kwon and Seo mostly keep their camera stationary and at a distance, so the focus is on how the girls interact as a group, rather than picking any one of them out as a protagonist. While Siyeon is a stranger at the beginning of the film, the other girls will be baring their souls to her by the end, and she to them. Kwon and Seo capture how friendships between young people are often this fluid, especially as the girls aren’t quite old enough yet to be stuck in their ways or suspicious of newcomers. With that simple gesture, she’s one of them just a few scenes later, she’s hanging out and laughing with the girls as if they’ve been friends their whole lives. Siyeon quickly befriends the girls when one of them drops a contact lens on the floor, and Siyeon helps the group hunt for it by shining her phone light on the ground. We’re invited into the friendship between the girls in the photography club through the eyes of Siyeon, the new girl in class. After being verbally communicated with the directors, the actors acted spontaneously.” As a result, the four main characters - Siyeon (Seol Si-yeon), Yeonwoo (Bae Yeon-woo), Sojung (Park So-jung), and Songhee (Han Song-hee) - and their friendships with each other feels intimately real. The script only had guidelines for description of locations and situations instead of dialogues, which were intended for directors and staff. As the press notes describe, “In order to show these girls in a vivid way, we tried ‘taking’ the scene, not ‘making’. Although the story is fictional, each actress plays a character named after themselves, and their dialogue is largely improvised. Short Vacation gets the little things right about teen girl friendships, perhaps because the two male directors collaborated so closely with their young female stars, and gave them significant creative control. What is “the end of the world” to teenage girls whose primary concerns are hanging out with their friends and making sure they get home before curfew? Set mostly over one hot summer day, the intimidating vastness of life is contrasted against the mundane trivialities of these girls’ lives and their friendships. In Kwon Min-pyo and Seo Hansol’s Short Vacation, four thirteen-year-old girls are asked to photograph “the end of the world.” Or at least, that’s the prompt their photography club teacher gives them for summer homework. The invasion of the Blue Meanies, led by a chief (voiced by Paul Angelis, who also does voice work for Ringo and George) who declares angrily to his underling, Max, that Blue Meanies never take “yes” for an answer owing to their dedicated negativity. Pepperland is reminiscent of an Edwardian bohemian fantasia of polite relaxation and gentlemanly recline, where the mayor of the town plays in a string quartet and the champions of the land are a foursome of bardic heroes called, inevitably, Sgt. It starts off in a magical kingdom called Pepperland, where free and easy creativity and benign good cheer reign, only to be targeted by an army of nasty creatures called the Blue Meanies who, with their henchmen, want to destroy this last corner of the nonblue universe. In Dunning’s film, thanks to a screenplay penned by a small battery of writers, including original story scribe Al Brodax and future Love Story hitmaker Erich Segal, that jaunty number becomes the basis of an oddball, highly unserious take on a Tolkienesque fantasy quest tale. Yellow Submarine takes its title and core imagery from one of the most deliberately lightweight, yet naggingly catchy tunes Lennon and McCartney ever wrote, a burlesque-cum-tribute to singalong shanties of the Liverpool docklands surely familiar to any son of that port city, given a new paint job in hallucinogenic hues. If you look at a recent, lauded, smart, but very anodyne kind of animated film, Inside Out (2015), you can see very similar ideas to those in Yellow Submarine, but bound by neat chains of cause and effect in painting the workings of the psyche in total contradiction to the protean delights of the surrealist wellspring both films reference. Nonetheless, their creative lexicon was key to the vision Dunning and his animation team realised, which extrapolates images and ideas from their songs, as well as builds sequences for their music to play over to create a uniquely textured film.Ĭonsidering that animation opens up to filmmakers a form of expression seemingly without limits, most animated features are amazingly conservative, mainly tethered to realistic precepts and slight fantasies meant for kids. The film Dunning was assigned was something very different in concept and style, and only when the film was nearing the end of production did the band members realise something marvellous had been created. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr kept their distance from the project, which was handled by George Dunning, an animator who had a lot of experience working on a playful, animated children’s show about the band that ran during the second half of the ’60s. Martin, as well as helping to create the Beatles songs heard on the film’s soundtrack, also composed the orchestral score that gives the movie some of its gorgeous, jaunty, romantic gloss. I was moved to revisit Yellow Submarine in part because of the passing of Sir George Martin, the Beatles’ illustrious producer and facilitator. (Later, UA eventually declared they hadn’t met that obligation, requiring them to make the 1970 documentary Let It Be.) Ironically, Yellow Submarine was a byproduct of the band’s uninterest in appearing in another film: their contractual obligation to United Artists forced them to develop a new movie project, and they decided producing an animated film through their newly formed recording and production company, Apple, seemed a good way to discharge the obligation. Any still from the film could be used as an emblem and summation of the psychedelic creed. The film has become an iconic work encapsulating the Beatles’ oeuvre and mystique and indeed the era of its making. Amidst the relics of the high psychedelic era, Yellow Submarine is one of the most instantly recognisable, a jokey and absurdist adventure tale built around one of pop culture’s singular creative wellsprings, the music and artistic personae of The Beatles. Perform operations on users, channels, and chats via the Workflow Automator As we know from our discussion of double slits in Chapter 27.3 Young’s Double Slit Experiment, light is diffracted by each slit and spreads out after passing through. The analysis of a diffraction grating is very similar to that for a double slit (see Figure 4). The maxima become narrower and the regions between darker as the number of slits is increased. Maxima can be produced at the same angles, but those for the diffraction grating are narrower and hence sharper. Idealized graphs of the intensity of light passing through a double slit (a) and a diffraction grating (b) for monochromatic light. (credits: (a), via Flickr (b) whologwhy, Flickr) Figure 3. (a) This Australian opal and (b) the butterfly wings have rows of reflectors that act like reflection gratings, reflecting different colors at different angles. The central maximum is white, and the higher-order maxima disperse white light into a rainbow of colors. (b) The pattern obtained for white light incident on a grating. (a) Light passing through is diffracted in a pattern similar to a double slit, with bright regions at various angles. A diffraction grating is a large number of evenly spaced parallel slits. Tiny, finger-like structures in regular patterns act as reflection gratings, producing constructive interference that gives the feathers colors not solely due to their pigmentation. Natural diffraction gratings occur in the feathers of certain birds. Figure 3 shows idealized graphs demonstrating the sharper pattern. That is, their bright regions are narrower and brighter, while their dark regions are darker. What makes them particularly useful is the fact that they form a sharper pattern than double slits do. In addition to their use as novelty items, diffraction gratings are commonly used for spectroscopic dispersion and analysis of light. Diffraction gratings work both for transmission of light, as in Figure 1, and for reflection of light, as on butterfly wings and the Australian opal in Figure 2 or the CD pictured in the opening photograph of this chapter, Chapter 27 Figure 1. These can be photographically mass produced rather cheaply. A diffraction grating can be manufactured by scratching glass with a sharp tool in a number of precisely positioned parallel lines, with the untouched regions acting like slits. An interference pattern is created that is very similar to the one formed by a double slit (see Figure 1). Discuss the pattern obtained from diffraction grating.Īn interesting thing happens if you pass light through a large number of evenly spaced parallel slits, called a diffraction grating. In a strange twist, the Chiffons recorded a version of “My Sweet Lord” a year before the case was decided. Harrison was found guilty of “subconscious” plagiarism. Famously, the owners of the rights to the song sued George Harrison in 1971, claiming that he was guilty of plagiarizing “He’s So Fine” in writing his hit “My Sweet Lord”. “He’s So Fine” is a great little song that was released by the Chiffons in 1962. 19 “He’s” this, in a 1963 hit for the Chiffons : SO FINE The term derives from the ancient belief that hot weather was caused when Sirius (the Dog Star) was in close proximity to the sun. “Dog Days” is the term given to the warmest and most humid days of summer.
There is no shortage of styles to pursue. Use the slower pace of night to reflect on results and changes to settings to get the image you’re after. While you may end up with a great shot, relying on the camera’s choices means that you are removing the guarantee of consistency.įar better to take control, let your light painting tools determine the aperture you set, and adjust the shutter speed to influence the amount of ambient light gathered by the camera. Oncoming headlights, for instance, may trick the camera into thinking that the scene is brighter than it is, leading to underexposure. Any stray light or shadow detected by the camera while it’s metering will affect the settings used. Why? Simply put, using Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority means that you are asking the camera to make decisions on your behalf. Look to the landscape and sky to inspire your choice of palette – either complementary or contrasting The processes of light painting encourages experimentation and rewards creativity, not to mention demanding that practitioners break out of their comfort zones into the world of full manual camera operation. Pre-digital, the technique was hugely experimental, given both the characteristics of film during long exposures and the fact that you had to wait for visual feedback on your results.īut as camera technology has improved, along with that of small, battery-powered lights (and the batteries themselves), light painting has become infinitely more accessible, and is commonly seen as a photographic rite of passage – with good reason. The practice of using light to trace a path into an image began with time-in-motion studies and subsequently evolved creatively in the hands of artists like Man Ray, Picasso, and photographer Eric Staller. Known by many names, light painting (or light graffiti, light art, painting with light) is a well-established photographic process with roots that can be traced back to the early days of photography.
